Rescues

Hawk Feather Ranch is the home to several horses which have been rescued from a variety of unique situations.  We genuinely care about their health, well-being and work hard to give them the best quality of life on our 27 acres of land.

Our Horses

Dakota

Sometimes known as “grandpa”, Dakota is happy to welcome all visitors. This old guy has seen and done it all. Even though Dakota was a victim of neglect as a young horse, he has a gentle disposition, with just the right amount of  “ornery” to give him a personality that makes him a favorite at HFR.

Dakota was rescued by Liz and Joe back in 2001 and has been a beloved member of the family ever since.

Mailei

Her name is spelled weird, we know. It is pronounced “MAY-LEE” and she is a Thoroughbred – Hanovarian cross. Mai joined the family when her previous owner didn’t want her anymore and Liz and Joe brought her home in 2011. She can trace her roots back to the famous racehorse, Seattle Slew, which makes her a great mount for advanced riders only.

Don’t let her almost 17 hands height fool you – she may be a big girl, but she is as sweet as pie.

Gypsy

This friendly girl might only have one eye to see with, but she brings a smile to the face of anyone who sees her! She is sweet and happy to have everyone’s attention. Gypsy was originally used as a show horse, but once she lost the eye, she was surrendered to an equine therapy barn.

Unfortunately, they could not keep her due to her blindness and she was then brought to Liz and Joe in 2021. Gypsy is fun to ride on trails and enjoyable English or Western style. Even with only one eye, she can run barrels and poles like a champ.

Hope

Hope is a very special member of the HFR family. She was initially rescued by someone who tried but was ultimately unable to rehabilitate her. Her past is a mystery, but her fear and distrust of people lead us to believe she was abused.

Joe was hired to train Hope and she was eventually surrendered to Liz and Joe in 2019. Hope does not let people approach or touch her except for Joe who is the only person she will trust. Their bond is lovely to watch.

Cheyenne

This charming girl  came to HFR as a rescue in 2024. She has some confirmation flaws and does not know much about how to be ridden. But this mare is eager to please. She is currently in training to be a lesson horse and hopefully will be ready to join lessons soon.

In the meantime, she works as a companion for the other horses, especially Silverhawk, who is her bestest buddy.

Silverhawk

This handsome guy came to live with Liz and Joe in 2024 after his previous owners were unable to keep him. He is a wonderful lesson horse who takes very good care of his riders. He is gentle enough for beginners, and more advanced riders enjoy running him around barrels and poles at full blast!

Everybody loves Silver. Hi ho and away!!

Bo

Help us welcome the newest addition to our herd, big Bo, a Percheron Quarter mix. Bo was surrendered by a family whose primary caregiver went away to college. Bo was no longer able to get the proper attention he needed and the family realized it was best to help him find a new home where he could be properly cared for and have some companionship. Bo came to Hawk Feather Ranch in November and was quickly accepted by the herd, where he is making friends and enjoying being the center of attention.
